The service, co-led by our own Anna Jaffe and Rabbi Yonatan Rudnick is both a more traditional Shabbat morning service, combined with wonderful, creative music. Join in on Saturday, May 10 at 10 AM. Services are held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th Street (75th and Nall, parking in back).

This week I have been pretty singularly focused on Pesach. If I have a favorite holiday, it is Passover.
For me it brings out two of our most prominent Jewish values. One is the idea of Machloket L’Sheim Shamayim-argument for the sake of heaven. Respectful disagreement is how we learn and how we grow. In our Pesach Seder we read of the Machloket, the disagreement and debate between Rav and Shumuel. Shmuel speaks of our enslavement being of the body, or physical enslavement. Rav speaks of spiritual enslavement-the idols we worship, or our misplaced idolization. It is a debate that compels us to think about what might enslave us.
The other value is one of empathy. We are keenly aware of our obligation to not oppress the stranger, and to love the stranger because we were strangers in the land of Egypt. Read more.
This Week's Torah Portion Pesach Parshiot
This week we read from a different Torah portion each day specifically for our Pesach celebration. Encompassed in the various Parshiot are a sense of what G-d does for us (redemption from bondage), and what we do to fulfill our part in our covenant with G-d; observing the Mitzvot, and in so doing, treating others with compassion and dignity.
