While we look forward to this year’s Passover celebration which begins Saturday night, and we come together with our community Seder at Unity Temple on Sunday night, we don’t forget the gift of Shabbos which we are given every week. This coming Friday, April 11, at 6:45 PM, we come together on Zoom for Shabbat blessings and a bit of Torah.
Shir L'Shabbat Service
We join in the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat with the monthly Shir L’Shabbat service. The service, co-led by our own Anna Jaffe and Rabbi Yonatan Rudnick is both a more traditional Shabbat morning service, combined with wonderful, creative music. Join in on Saturday, May 10 at 10 AM. Services are held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th Street (75th and Nall, parking in back).

Pesach is my favorite holiday. Not because it is our holiday of liberation, although as themes go it is a pretty good one. Not because of the food we eat. I know food is a controversial and highly subjective topic. For me, after I have fulfilled the mitzvah of eating matzah that I accomplish at the first two Seders, I have had my fill. After that it is an opportunity to celebrate a low-carb diet.
What I like is embodied in both the memories it instills, and the opportunity for meaningful discussion. As to the former, my memories of our Passover Seder is one of family; parents along with an aunt and uncle - all of blessed memory. Read more.
This Week's Torah Portion Parashat Tzav(Vayikra/Leviticus 6:1-8:36)
This week, we read of the Aish Tamid - the flame or fire of the altar that is to be burned continually. We associate this reference today to the Ner Tamid, and within the Torah to the continual fire that is burned on the sacrificial altar; a reference to an external flame. Yet, the more important flame is the flame that burns within. Particularly during difficult times it is even of greater importance that our internal flame; a flame that seeks compassion and a better world for everyone continues to burn.
Carrying the metaphor a step further, the flame does not always need to be a wildfire. More often than not, it can be a gentle glow, leading us to sensitivity and kindness to the people in our lives in every interaction.
