In keeping with this week’s Torah portion I have been thinking about a recent experience Fay and I had visiting New York City. We have family there: my youngest, one of Fay’s sisters, a niece, and a dear friend of mine since childhood and his wonderful wife. As is the case with all of our visits, we tend to center our experience on art (yes, and the food which is always wonderful)...Read more.
This Week's Torah Portion Parashat Vayekhel (Shemot/Exodus 35:1-38:20)
This week, we read of the artistic creativity of Bezalel and Oholiab in constructing the Mishkan-the Holy Tabernacle. In Judaism, we learn of the importance of Hiddur Mitzvah, of the beautification of the Mitzvah. Visual art, much like music and other forms of expression, can move us toward a higher spiritual plane, and create a sense of heightened intention in engaging with G-d, and with each other.
Simcha Spotlight Coming this Thursday, March 20th at 6 PM on Zoom, Rabbi Doug will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah year of being ordained as a rabbi from the Academy for Jewish Religion-New York (AJR). It is just one part of a larger program being presented by AJR. Access the event by Zoom and use this password, if prompted: COS5785.
We also celebrate the Bat Mitzvah of Tilly Never, daughter of Erica Clinton and Brent Never, on Saturday, March 29th at 10:30 AM at Westport Presbyterian Church (201 Westport Road). Please join Tilly at the service as she takes her steps into the adult Jewish community at Kol Ami.
